Three days of driving to verify a pizza claim is exactly the kind of thing we do here. You might not need to drive that far, but if you’re in Madison, you need to know the difference between a cracker-thin bar pie at Drake and the loaded, charred crust at Brittany’s Brick Oven.

We hit the tourist trail, the winery tasting room, and the local bakery after a Clifty Falls hike. One spot serves the best food in town, while another runs on Pepsi only and dry tenderloin.

Trust the jalapeño bacon breadsticks. Here’s where to eat.

Worth the three-day drive
Friendly staff and welcoming locals
Chicken Bacon Ranch pizza standout
Perfectly soft, flavorful breadsticks
Out-of-this-world Peanut Butter Pie

I drove three days to get here, and I would do it again. Brittany’s Brick Oven Pizza is the kind of place that makes you question why you ever ate anywhere else. The Chicken Bacon Ranch pizza arrives with a crust that has real char and flavor, and the toppings are piled on like the kitchen is afraid you might leave hungry. The breadsticks are soft, buttery, and just salty enough. Then there’s the Peanut Butter Pie, which sounds like a joke and tastes like a revelation. The staff treated me like a regular by the second visit. Friendly locals at the counter pointed me toward the right order. This place is worth the mileage, plain and simple.

Chef Mark's evident care
Outstanding calamari and halibut
Attentive, friendly service
Excellent steak and pasta
Quiet, pleasant atmosphere

Red On Main operates with a quiet confidence that most restaurants never achieve. Chef Mark’s care shows up in every plate, from the calamari that’s crisp without being rubbery to a halibut that flakes exactly as it should. The steak and pasta both hit their marks, but the real draw is the atmosphere: calm, unhurried, and pleasant. Service was attentive without hovering. I sat for two hours and never felt rushed. It’s the rare spot where you can have a serious dinner or a relaxed celebration. If you’re looking for a place that respects both the food and the guest, this is it. Just go hungry and plan to stay a while.

Tenderloin needs more moisture
Pepsi only, no Coke
Soothing, beautiful dining room
Patient, caring waitstaff
Generous, filling portions

Rivertown Grill has a dining room so soothing you might forget where you are. The tenderloin, however, could use more moisture; it came out a bit dry, which was a letdown given how patient and caring the waitstaff were. The portions are generous and filling, so you won’t leave hungry. But note: it’s Pepsi only, no Coke. That’s a dealbreaker for some, a minor quirk for others. The service is the real highlight here, with staff who actually listen. I’d go back for the atmosphere and the service, but I’d order something saucier next time. It’s a solid stop, just not perfect.

Fresh, fairly priced breakfast
Perfect Clifty Falls stop
Small town, welcoming feel

Horst's Little Bakery Haus Hilltop is the perfect stop before or after Clifty Falls. The staff were patient and offered great recommendations when I couldn’t decide. The breakfast was fresh and fairly priced, which is rare in tourist-adjacent spots. It’s a small town kind of place where people say hello and the coffee comes hot. The bakery cases hold real pastries, not the sad gas station kind. I ate quickly and felt welcomed. If you’re hiking the falls, this is your refueling point. Nothing fancy, but it does what it does very well. I’d call it a quiet win.

Fascinating fermentation science explained

Thomas Family Winery sits one block from Main, but it feels like a different world. The wine guides are knowledgeable and gracious, explaining fermentation science in a way that doesn’t put you to sleep. I tried their semi-sweet picks and found several I’d happily buy by the bottle. The tasting room is comfortable, and you can see the care in how they talk about their craft. It’s not a place for serious oenophiles, but for someone who likes wine without the snobbery, it’s perfect. I left with a bottle and a bit more knowledge. Worth the short detour.

Friendly service while visiting

Hos Coffee runs on fresh pastries and bold coffee, and it works. The sugar-free syrups let you customize a latte without the guilt, and the homemade whipped cream on mochas is a touch most places skip. It’s a cozy, busy local hangout; every seat has someone reading a book or typing on a laptop. Service is friendly, even when the line stretches. I ordered a mocha and a pastry, both arrived quickly. The vibe is what draws people back. It’s not the quietest spot, but the energy is good. If you need caffeine and a bit of local flavor, this is the place.

Highlights
Excellent food, enjoyable lunch
Daughter approved dining experience
Pleasant atmosphere on arrival
Mixed service and pricing
Cleanliness and language issues

El Nopal Mexican Food gave me an excellent lunch, though the experience had its rough edges. The food was enjoyable, and my daughter approved of everything she tried. The atmosphere on arrival was pleasant, bright and welcoming. But the service and pricing were inconsistent; I noticed a few dishes cost more than expected without warning. Cleanliness was mostly fine, but there were moments that raised questions. Language differences led to a mix-up on an order, which they fixed, but it took time. Still, the food is solid. I’d go back for the enchiladas, with patience on the side.

The Red Pepperoni is the kind of place that makes you feel welcome even when you arrive late. The staff greeted me warmly at 9 PM and didn’t make me feel rushed. The patio is great for summer evenings, and the drinks were tasty without being overpriced. The food is solid, not mind-blowing, but worth returning for. Parking is easy near the entrance, which is a small miracle in this town. I’d come back for the service and the relaxed vibe. It’s not a destination, but it’s a dependable spot. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Loaded toppings on pizza
Two-dollar Thursday beer specials
Attentive bartender service
Calzone worth returning for

Drake serves an ultra-thin crust that you have to try to believe. The pizza arrives loaded with toppings, almost bridge-like over the cracker base. They have two-dollar Thursday beer specials, which is a fantastic deal if you time it right. The bartender was attentive without hovering, and the calzone is worth returning for alone. This place knows how to do bar food right. It’s not fancy, but it doesn’t try to be. If you want a quick, satisfying bite with a cold beer, Drake delivers. Just don’t expect deep dish; thin is the game here.

Best food in Madison
Ridiculously good jalapeño bacon breadsticks
Hot, fresh, generously topped pizza
Crisp salads with fresh dressing

Bello's Pizza serves the best food in Madison, and I’ll defend that claim. The jalapeño bacon breadsticks are ridiculously good: salty, spicy, and chewy in the right places. The pizza comes hot, fresh, and generously topped, with a crust that holds up without being heavy. Even the salads are crisp, with a dressing that tastes like it was made this morning. I’ve been twice in one week and already plan a third visit. This is the place I’d point anyone visiting town. No hype, just excellent execution. If you only eat one pizza in Madison, eat here.

Rock and roll lunch energy
Crispy Brussels sprouts standout
Blackened Mahi done right
Pretzel with beer cheese
Service that invites return

Mad Love Eat & Drink plays rock and roll at lunch, which sets the tone for what follows. The Brussels sprouts arrive crispy, almost charred, with a tang that cuts through the oil. The blackened Mahi is done right: flaky, spiced, and not drowned in sauce. The pretzel with beer cheese is the kind of starter you order again even after you’ve had better mains elsewhere. Service here makes you want to come back, which is rare. The room is loud but comfortable. It’s not the fanciest place in town, but it knows what it’s doing. If you want a lunch that feels like a small event, this is your stop.

Highlights
House-made sangria worth trying
Attentive service on quiet nights
Generous portions at fair prices
Seafood dishes stand out well
Calzone earns solid praise

Black olives is the kind of Italian restaurant that doesn’t need to shout. On a quiet night, the service was attentive without being intrusive. The house-made sangria has real fruit and a boozy kick, worth trying even if you usually skip wine. Portions are generous for the price, and the seafood dishes stand out better than the standard red sauce fare. The calzone earned solid praise at my table, and I’d order it again. It’s not fancy, but it’s honest. If you’re tired of chain Italian, this place gives you something closer to home cooking. Just don’t expect a scene, expect a meal.
