Ranking donuts is a fool’s errand, yet here we are, armed with a glazed map and a full gas tank. Columbus deserves better than a single champion, so we’ve lined up eleven contenders, from the silent, gluten-free coup of 1823 Bakehouse to the gravitational pull of Pana Donuts’ drive-through on the southside.

Along the way, an apple fritter at Donuts N' Coffee convinced me to cancel plans, and Best Donut #1 earned its audacious name with a maple peanut number that tastes like a Payday’s beautiful child. Even the cookies at Dirty Dough and the churros at Panaderia La Azteca crashed the party.

You will not agree with all of this. That’s fine.

Eat your way through the list and fight me later.

Highlights
Delicious gluten-free wedding cake
Rave reviews from all guests
Beautifully decorated and tasty
Chocolate chip cookie like heaven
Highly recommended for catering

1823 Bakehouse operates less like a donut shop and more like a quiet conspiracy to make every other bakery in town look like it's not trying. I arrived expecting a ring of fried dough and instead found myself contemplating a gluten-free wedding cake that had apparently converted an entire reception hall into believers. The chocolate chip cookie, which I ate standing over my car's hood, achieved a texture I can only describe as heaven's idea of a practical joke. If you need catering, they will handle it with the same grace they apply to their frosting. Just know that you will leave ranking every other pastry against a ghost.

Southside's finest donut destination
Friendly staff, speedy drive-through
Krispy Kronut and cake favorites
Soft, airy, perfectly fried treats

Pana Donuts sits on the southside like a gravitational anomaly, pulling in cars through a drive-through so efficient you might wonder if they've hired a pit crew. The Krispy Kronut is a hybrid that should not work, yet it does, with a soft, airy crumb that surrenders to your teeth like a polite surrender. Cake favorites hold their own, dense enough to remind you they mean business. The staff treated me like a regular even though I'd never been there before, which felt either like exceptional hospitality or a very specific memory trick. Either way, I left with a bag that lasted approximately four minutes.

Gracious staff, hot food
Best Indian in Columbus
Flavorful buffet, robust sides
Friendly owners explain dishes
Comforting, healthy, delicious

Apna Kitchen is technically not a donut shop, but I have included it here because the buffet's warm, spiced air makes you reconsider what a sweet morning treat should be. The staff is gracious, the food arrives hot, and the owners patiently explain each dish as if I were a beloved but slow relative. The best Indian food in Columbus, hands down, with a flavor profile that hits like a friendly but firm handshake. You will not find a glazed ring, but you will find comfort, health, and a side of robust chutney that makes you wonder why donuts ever got popular. Go for the buffet; stay for the education.

Highlights
Layered doughnuts reign supreme
Coconut cream is personal favorite
Exceptional vegan and gluten-free options
Cookies and cream vegan standout
Stop here, immediately

Parlor Doughnuts redefines the game with a layered doughnut that shatters the crust like a thousand tiny applause. The coconut cream version is my personal favorite, a tropical whisper that lingers like a good secret. I was skeptical of the vegan options, but the cookies and cream vegan standout tasted like it had been crafted by someone who genuinely cares about the suffering of dairy cows and the joy of their customers. Stop here immediately, they said, and I did, and now I cannot stop. The gluten-free options are exceptional, which is rare enough to be worth a pilgrimage.

Highlights
Fluffy, airy, not thick
Early hours, worth waking
Basic glaze and chocolate standout
Last six were all amazing
New favorite donut spot

Donut Central has cracked the code on texture: fluffy, airy, and not thick, like a cloud that decided to become breakfast. The basic glaze and chocolate are the standouts, which sounds simple until you realize that simplicity is the hardest thing to perfect. I woke up at an hour that should be illegal to achieve this, and it was worth every lost minute of sleep. The last six I ate were all amazing, a streak that statistically should have ended by the third. This is my new favorite spot in town, and I say that with the full knowledge that I have said that about three other places this month. They earned it.

Highlights
Best donuts in town
Lightning-fast drive-thru service
Unforgettable apple fritter dates
Dangerously delicious, three minimum
Friendly staff, loyal regulars

Donuts N' Coffee has a drive-thru so fast that I suspect they have a time machine in the back, and the apple fritter they handed me was a date I will never forget. It was dangerously delicious, the kind of pastry that makes you cancel plans and sit in your car for an extra ten minutes. Three minimum, they say, and I obeyed with the discipline of a man following a religious text. The staff is friendly, the regulars are loyal, and the coffee is better than it has any right to be. Best donuts in town, and I will fight anyone who disagrees, though I'd probably lose because I'd be too full to move.

Highlights
Mochi donuts worth seeking
Korean corn dogs, mixed results
Cheesy corn dog recommended
Crunchy breading, fresh flavors
Boba and shakes available

Winnie Mochi Donut is a place that understands the value of a quest, because you will need to seek out these mochi donuts with the determination of a treasure hunter. The texture is chewy, springy, and entirely unlike any conventional donut, which is either a revelation or a polite puzzle depending on your mood. The Korean corn dogs are a mixed bag, but the cheesy one is a clear recommendation, with a crunchy breading that yields to molten cheese like a hug. Boba and shakes round out the menu, though I stuck to the donuts and left with a newfound respect for glutinous rice flour. Fresh flavors, earnest execution, and a journey worth taking.

Highlights
Enormous oatmeal cream pies
Better coffee than chains
Cozy, welcoming atmosphere
Excellent tea selection
Kind, attentive service

Gramz Bakery feels like stepping into a grandmother's kitchen, if that grandmother had impeccable taste and a hidden stash of enormous oatmeal cream pies. The pies are the size of a small planet, and they are so good that I nearly wept into the cream filling. The coffee is better than any chain, which is a low bar, but they clear it with room to spare. The tea selection is excellent, and the cozy atmosphere wraps around you like a well-worn blanket. Service is kind and attentive, the kind that remembers your order and asks about your day. I left with a pie in my bag and a warmth in my chest that no donut has ever provided.

Highlights
Delicious, affordable baked goods
Try new items each visit
Must-order churros and flan
Worth the trip back
Great value for money

Panaderia La Azteca is a delightful puzzle because every time I visit, I try something new and leave wondering why I ever doubted the power of a bakery that charges so little for so much joy. The churros and flan are mandatory orders, the churros crisp and cinnamon-laced, the flan silky enough to qualify as a liquid. Affordable, delicious, and worth the trip back, this is a place where the value is so good you feel like you're getting away with something. The baked goods are humble but profound, and I have started planning my visits around what new item I might discover. Great value for money, but the real currency is happiness.

Maple peanut Payday memory
Best donuts ever, ever
Worth the I-65 detour
Open at 4:30 AM
Kolache excellence acknowledged

Best Donut #1 is a name that makes a claim, and then it backs it up with a maple peanut creation that tastes like a Payday candy bar had a beautiful child with a donut. This is the best donut I have ever eaten, and I say that with the gravity of a man who has eaten many donuts. The I-65 detour is worth it, even if it adds forty minutes to your trip, because some journeys are measured in glory, not minutes. Open at 4:30 AM, which is either a service or a challenge. The kolache is also excellent, a savory counterpoint to the sweet madness. Ever, they said. Ever.

Highlights
Friendly staff
Quick service
Affordable treats
Tasty cookie variety

Dirty Dough Columbus is a cookie shop, but I have included it because the staff is so friendly that they could sell me a donut-shaped cookie and I would call it a triumph. The service is quick, the treats affordable, and the variety of cookies is tasty enough to make you forget you came for fried dough. I tried the chocolate chip, which was soft and warm, and the sugar cookie, which was a sweet rebellion. They are not donuts, but they are a worthy detour, a pleasant interruption in a morning that was supposed to be about rings and holes. Never underestimate the power of a good cookie.

Highlights
Homemade everything, visibly obvious
Full menus from breakfast through dinner
Kind, helpful service throughout
New go-to for any meal

Cornerstone Bakery•Bistro•Coffee is the kind of place where you can see the homemade nature of everything in the first bite, whether that bite is a pastry, a sandwich, or a slice of coffee cake. The full menu runs from breakfast through dinner, which means you can start with a donut and end with a burger, all under the same roof and the same kind, helpful service. I have found my new go-to for any meal, a statement I make with the confidence of a person who has been burned by too many mediocre breakfasts. The visible effort in every dish is both comforting and a little intimidating, like watching a professional pianist play with your hands. Go for the donuts, stay for the lunch, and forgive yourself for not having found this sooner.
