You think you know barbecue until you’ve driven past Nashville’s courthouse square and followed your nose to Sugar Creek’s smoky pulled pork. Brown County’s tourist crowds get the shops, but locals know the real action is split between two poles: Sugar Creek’s tender, sauce-optional pork and Trolly’s gloriously messy Italian sausage with peppers.

I’ve burned my fingers on both, and I’d do it again. One spot guarantees a return visit; the other demands you bring extra napkins.

Either way, you’re eating well within spitting distance of the hill country. Now go decide for yourself.

Warm, friendly service
Worth the drive
A return visit guaranteed

I drove out to Sugar Creek Barbeque Co on a whim, and I’m already planning the return trip. The pulled pork is tender, properly smoky, and it doesn’t need a bath in sauce to impress. The staff greeted me like a regular, which felt nice after a long drive. Service was warm without being fussy. The place itself is humble, but that’s part of the charm. Worth the miles, honestly. I left full, satisfied, and slightly annoyed I hadn’t found it sooner. If you’re nearby, do yourself a favor. Go. Then go again.

Seriously good, no-frills food
Italian sausage with peppers
Outdoor smoker adds charm
Laid-back, friendly vibe
Quick bites, great people-watching

Trolly’s doesn’t try to be fancy, and thank goodness for that. The Italian sausage with peppers is seriously good, messy in the best way. There’s an outdoor smoker that adds a little character, though the smoke smell alone could sell the place. The vibe is laid-back, almost too relaxed, but it works. I grabbed a quick bite and watched people amble by. No frills, no fuss, just solid food and a friendly nod. It’s the kind of spot you’d stumble into by accident, then make a habit of. Bring a napkin. You’ll need it.
